Timely Tip for April Gardeners:

Celebrate Earth Day this month and go “green” with Calloway’s Nursery. We offer many organic products to help you develop a “greener” environment. We also offer traditional solutions but for the gardener who is exploring the “greener” side here are a few ideas.

A successful garden begins with good soil. Organic material is important to the soil composition. It helps with drainage and increases the soil microbe population. Expanded shale is used to break up hard, compacted clay soils.  Calloway’s Organic Fertilizer contains seven food-grade meals and can be applied to your lawn and other plantings. Applying molasses will help stimulate microorganisms and energize your plants.

Top dress your flowerbeds and containers with organic mulches.  They not only break down slowly putting organic material back into the soil but, they also prevent weeds, conserve moisture and cool the soil during the heat of the summer. Other organic insecticides and fungicides are Neem Oil, Diatomaceous Earth and Insecticidal Soaps.  These are products which are safe to use around pets and children.

There are also beneficial insects available such as Ladybugs, Lacewings and Beneficial Nematodes! These guys will attack the pests and take care of them “naturally”.

Timely Tips for Gardeners - May PDF Print E-mail

Timely Tip for Calloway’s Gardeners in May:

Texas is home to nearly 5,000 native plant species due to the vast and diverse geography of our great state! Often people envision “native plants” with Mesquites and cacti but many of our basic landscape plants are native to Texas. After the Summer of 2011, gardeners are looking for Texas tough plants in their landscapes.  Native plants tolerate our Texas Summer heat better than most, require less water, need less mowing, provide habitats for birds, butterflies and other wildlife, protect the soil and save on fertilizers and insecticides.

Add native trees to your landscape and enjoy the colorful blooms from the Texas Mountain Laurel or Desert Willow. Select Texas Sage for its purple Summer flowers or the Red Yucca with its red spike-like bloom as additions to your landscape. Native grasses such as Mexican Feathergrass or Big Muhly add another different texture and look to the garden. Also, don’t forget the reliable perennials for providing Texas tough color! Blackfoot Daisy, Gaura, Coneflower and many of your Salvias are native to Texas and will provide color year after year once they are established.

Don’t forget Mom this month! Color in May comes from more than a bouquet of blossoms for Mom on Mother’s Day!  Plan ahead and give that special person a living bouquet that changes with the seasons. Buy your mom a native plant and know that you are making her garden a more enjoyable place for both her and the birds and butterflies.

Weed Control and Lawn Maintenance PDF Print E-mail
Written by Doug & Sheryl Strand

Hello Homeowners,

Springtime is on its way and the weeds are not far behind! This is the time of year when weeds will sprout up rapidly in lawns and make keeping your lawns manicured a nightmare. As you may have already noticed clover has taken over many yards and we have a couple of tips that may help you all tame these unruly weeds. Your community landscaper suggests going to your local nursery and purchasing a pre-emergent product or broad leaf weed killer to apply to the lawn. We understand that everyone is busy and may  be in the process of preparing for the spring and summer season by contacting their landscapers and making plans to care for their lawns, so we will be liberally monitoring yard maintenance during the month of February.  However, by March spring will be in full swing and we encourage everyone to try to keep their lawns well maintained during the growing season!  Good luck and we hope everyone has a wonderful spring and summer season!

Thank You,
